I could not contain myself. I could not turn away from the TV coverage. I was working radio, but had to position the television so I could every moment and experience
what the rest of the world was seeing. It was actually happenning. What we saw on Election Night 2008 wasn't just a fluke, or something that would be negated like a bad chad out of Florida. Reality was happening literally in front of our eyes, and millions had turned out to see history unfold.
We also are sitting of the reality of what exists in the financial world. Unemployment, a banking system that seems to falter at every twist and turn and no light at the end of the tunnel. Would this Chief Executive be able to put a superhero cape on and save the world, or at least ours? I asked these questions as President-Elect Obama headed to the White House to meet President Bush before the keys were handed over and Barack Obama took responsibility.
Finally the introductions and the VIP's were in place. Barack Obama took to the podium. He took the oath. He stood with his family and they all smiled. Time stood still as things seemed to come together. A family that no one dug up questionable things about. The daughters were too cute. Genuine smiles. Real people, not "politicians" smiling. Couple that love being together holding hands while walking down Pennsylvania Avenue. Obama-shakas to the Punahou Band. Acknowledgements for Hawai'i from the tv press. Seeing them dancing at the Inaugural Ball, something so public, yet so personal; where you didn't want to watch them while they danced because it looked like only a moment that they should share, but you couldn't take your eyes off and marvel at the "reality" of this couple together, and that he will lead our country. It's been a long time..perhaps since Nancy and Ronald Reagan since we've seen anything like that from a President with his family or spouse. We saw some of that briefly during the early campaign with Hillary and Bill Clinton and now that the pressure is off Hillary we see her very relaxed with Bill and her work. Indeed it's like we've been witness to the marriage between Barack and the country, then we got to see the wedding (Inaugural) dance and we're in the honeymoon. So now we get to see if the family (Congress) gets along.
Finally when the night was over, our President met with a small group of people which included our own Hawaii Representative Neil Abercrombie! He was on "Sunrise on KGMB9" the day earlier where he was just giddy about seeing someone from Hawaii become the most powerful person in the world!
I'm still in awe...and I'm hoping the rest of the world were watching and that they were in awe too!
