![]() HONOLULU, Hawai'i, July 7, 2009 -- What do the judges of the hula look for and see? Kumu Hula Vicki Holt Takamine shares her views on Merrie Monarch, her ancestors and her kuleana as it relates to hawaiians yesterday, today and tomorrow... We have lots of resources at our finger tips. Libraries, Archives, Bishop Museum, Encyclopedias (if you want to go old school) or search engines (ACK!) What about a living source of knowledge? Thatʻs what our kupuna hand down to us everyday, just a question if we are ready to receive it. Some of us from a young age are brought up in an environment where it is just normal to always accept manaʻo from your kupuna. Vicky Holt Takamine is a well known Kumu Hula, judge at the prestigious Merrie Monarch, activist and co-organizer/founder of ʻIlioulaokalani. She has received manaʻo from her ancestors and kupuna. She shares with others. We sat down and talked story with her prior to the Prince Lot Hula Festival that is held annually; we asked her to share her manaʻo about about where she grew up and her ohana...
There is a reason why she decides to rally and speak for Hawaiian Rights and issues...
As a Judge for the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, there are times when what the audience sees, the TV cameras show and the results of the judges are not the same. What do the judges see that the rest of us donʻt?
As Native Hawaiians, what can we do to advance our culture and who we are as a people?
Mahalo to Vicky Holt Takamine for talking story with us, and sharing her thoughts on hula, her background and ohana and more! For more information about VHT go to her website! |
