Ms. Igarashi accepted this "gift” from her friends so she can also use this opportunity publicly advocate and impart importance of early detection.

Diagnosed withstage III colon cancer, Igarashi has been sharing the importance of early detection in combating this number two killer of cancers.  In the spirit of sharing stories as shehas done so many times in her hula dancing, she has taken on a new role of anadvocate and stresses, “If you have symptoms, be aggressive in getting anappointment with a specialist and do not put things off. “

  • Blood in your stool.
  • Bloating
  • Fatigue

Immediately after she was diagnosed with colon cancer in June, she endured five surgical procedures.  The support from herfriends, ‘Ohana and colleagues were vital to her speedy recovery throughout this period of intense treatment and convalescence.

In addition to surgery, chemotherapy is also a part of the process to heal.  Every other week for three days, Igarashi is outfitted with her portable chemo pak, and attends meetings, or goes about her daily duties as an Executive Assistant.

Her colleague, Francine Costales, reflects how inspiring it is to see how a very challenging situation can be overcome with a positive attitude.  “Gina is an inspiration, and she has often shared with me that her strength comes from essentially her Hawaiian values and the importance of ‘Ohana. She adds, a positive attitude and a sense of humor also helps her get through her challenges.”

Igarashi is now back to work full time and still manages to tend to her three keiki, Kanalu and Hi’ilei, with the kokua of her spouse John Pascua.

Her arduous routine cancer treatment was never a distraction from her role as “mother”, and she continued her plans to celebrate her daughter’s high school graduation who is currently enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
